GALERIE FLEDERMAUS PRESS RELEASE

We’re branching out! Galerie Fledermaus is pleased to announce its debut of one of the United State’s most captivating emerging artists, Sarah Pezdek. PHOBIAS, Pezdek’s latest photographic series, aligns with the gallery’s Symbolist aesthetic and will be premiering this Fall at shows in Boston; New York and at the Modernism Show in Winnetka, Illinois.

Pezdek’s PHOBIAS expose the absurdist, fearful tendencies from which we all suffer.  Concurrently, there is a powerfully implicit optimism running through each work which is conveyed by elegantly mannered elements of form.

Pezdek’s images are allegorical expressions of specific and unusual phobias such as the fear of paper and the fear of being tied up. She creates a voyeuristic quality of witnessing someone’s deepest fears which are tangibly exposed in contorted postures and literally overtaken by objects. Distilled down to their essence, these phobias are not simply the insane products of one person’s bizarre imagination; more profoundly, they represent a perverseness universal to humankind, primal fear.

The muted tones of Pezdek’s 12 images express the effects fear has on the human condition. Lacking as the subjects are in a robustness of life, we observe how giving into baseness reduces us and imprisons us. We become slaves to our fears. To be confronted by one who is phobic and paralyzed by a bunch of balloons, for instance, it is plain to see the ridiculous power we allow fear to wield over ourselves. Pezdek’s sober palette also adds a clinical feel to the imagery and offers the viewer a rational approach to the irrational.

Through confrontation of fear -Pezdek’s magnificently artful version of Exposure Therapy- it is possible to overcome these manufactured and self-imposed obstacles. Gazing upon another, we see ourselves. In recognition, there is beauty.

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (March 16, 2017) –Palm Springs, CA (March 16, 2017) – Sarah Pezdek’s name is synonymous with high fashion having worked with publications like Cosmopolitan, OUT Magazine, Glamour and 25Ans and photographed New York Fashion Week including Michael Kors, Tom Ford and Zac Posen.

In May, photographer Sarah Pezdek (sarahpezdek.com) will debut her new fine art series, “PHOBIAS,” at Geras Tousignant Gallery (gtfineart.com) in Palm Springs.

“Sarah’s work brings a new conversation to the forefront on what ticks in our minds as people,” says James Scott Geras, owner of Geras Tousignant Gallery, “Fears are real and yet often subtext for the individual. These photographs create a dialog.”

Regarding the exhibition of PHOBIAS, Pezdak explained, “Fear is the most powerful of all self imposed barriers that we create within ourselves. It limits our potential on every level of our existence. PHOBIAS is a series focusing on outrageous fears – by utilizing curated objects and symbolism, the images are an exploration of our internal power and how our fear can confine us.“ Subjects addressed in the series include Papyrophobia (fear of paper), Linonophobia (fear of string) and Globophobia (fear of balloons) and several others.

With the series Pezdek is aiming to create a deeper connection with my audience to reflect on their own barriers, and how to overcome them and feel the expansive beauty of that release. Pezdek explains her perspective that, “We are all interconnected, down to a molecular level. The more we share our experiences, the more we can transcend our boundaries so that we can better connect with the power that resides within ourselves. Thereby, further allowing us to connect and relate more deeply with each other and the universe that we inhabit.”

The exhibit is also a multi-media collaboration. Composer Ivan Iusco is creating an original composition inspired by the series which will be playing during the opening night reception and during the exhibition in Palm Springs.
Ivan Iusco is an Italian award-winning soundtrack composer, now based in Los Angeles, who writes music for movies, documentaries, videoart and television.

He debuted in the film industry in 1999, having composed the music for the Apulian cult movie “LaCapaGira” directed by Alessandro Piva, and went on to win Best Soundtrack at the Valencia Film Festival (2000). Today, he has his own record label and has over a dozen film soundtracks and albums released.

“I wanted to work with a gallery that was part of the new art scene in Palm Springs,” says Pezdek, “Geras Tousignant was a great fit for me and he is excited to include Ivan’s music so it’s a full, immersive experience which was important for me with this show.” Gallery owner, James Scott Geras, has been a fine art photographer for over 30 years and was named a top photographer by LA Weekly.

Sarah Pezdek is currently in the midst of working on several fashion projects based in New York City, and is a strong supporter of her local arts scene. Sarah is self-taught in both realms of photography and fine art.
